Our Craft

Marrow & Hide makes a small number of leather bags a year. Every piece is cut from full-grain hide, saddle-stitched by hand at the stress points, and finished with solid brass.

Why full-grain

Most leather goods are made from split or corrected hide — the surface sanded down and coated in pigment so every panel looks identical. It photographs well on day one and cracks by year three.

Full-grain keeps the top layer of the hide intact, with the grain and the marks the animal actually carried. It is harder to cut, harder to stitch, and more expensive per square foot. It is also the only leather that improves with use.

How the bags are made

Panels are cut by hand, edges are bevelled, sanded, and burnished with wax rather than sealed with paint. Stress points are saddle-stitched with two needles, so a broken thread tightens the seam instead of unravelling it. Hardware is solid brass, not plated zinc.

Stitching and hardware are serviced for the life of the bag. Write to us with a photo and we will tell you what it needs.
