Leather craftsman tools and vegetable-tanned hide on a workbench

Why full-grain

Most leather goods are made from split or corrected hide, sanded smooth and coated in pigment. It looks uniform on day one and cracks by year three.

Full-grain keeps the top layer of the hide intact, with the grain and the marks the animal actually carried. It is harder to cut and harder to stitch. It also gets better the longer you use it.
